MAKING CONNECTIONS TO CONNECTIONS

Connections were connecting to connections. The senseless death of this patient, the experiences in Bosnia, the history of corruption and deception and intolerance. Hiding, twisting, bending, distorting – even inventing - the truth. The Crusades. The slaughter of the Huguenots. The Inquisition. The Holocaust. The witch hunts. Connections were connecting to connections. September 11. Jim Jones and David Koresch, the Palestinians and the Israelis, the Catholics and Protestants of Ireland. Fighting. Hating. Killing. The powerful taking and the meek giving.

Surrendering lands, monies, and power. Surrendering freedom. Surrendering the right and the responsibility to think. Connections were connecting to connections. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The truth shall set you free.

All of his life, Zach had been making connections. Connections to the truth. These connections led Zach to the point he was at now, ready to put his plan into action. The Plan. The plan to end all plans. The Grand Master Plan. Not just a plan to be the best basketball player, to excel in med school, or to develop the very best medical clinic anywhere.

No. The Plan was more. Never before had Zach been so sure of himself. So confident. So certain that he had formulated the one plan that was worthy of his every effort, all his energies, all his time. A plan that had to be carried out. It just had to.

And it was up to Zach to do it. His job. Not an easy job. Improbable. Impracticable. Probably inconceivable to almost anyone but Zach.

But to Zach it was now so crystal clear. So plain. There was no other action. No alternative. No options. The plan must be followed. To the letter. It would take strong individuals with strong wills – somehow Zach would have to persuade some mighty powerful and influential people that the plan must become a reality. It was the only way.

Zach leaned back in his chair, listening to the soothing words of John Lennon:

Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will live as one…..

Zach also dreamed of a world not divided by war or religion or other negative forces. Zach was a man of action, but he was also a dreamer, and he really believed that the world could live as one, living for today and living to make tomorrow brighter and better for future generations.

But that dream would never become reality as long as religion wielded its ugly head throughout the civilized world, creating enemies and hatred among those who prayed to different gods, and siphoning off minds, bodies, time and riches into the dark hole of lies and superstitions.

Zach could not remain silent. He remembered reading something Thomas Jefferson had said: "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." Zach had to speak out against the tyranny that he knew had taken hold in this country and throughout the world. Too many good people had remained silent for too long.

Zach was ready for step one in his plan. He contacted one of his friends in the movie industry, who put him in touch with a producer of documentary films. With the help of a few friends, Zach put together the money to produce a short documentary he called, “Medicine and Religion: Enemies or Friends?” One segment was entitled, “Jehovah’s Witnesses: Jury of Death?” Zach insisted on helping to write the script and to be in on every aspect of the film.

The film explored the relationship between medicine and religion. It showed how sometimes they blended together, each providing comfort and solace to sick patients, each helping to ease the pain or to speed recovery. It discussed the dual affect of science and spirituality on the healing process, and how studies showed that both were important factors in the recovery of patients. It also showed how different religions and cults bent and twisted and interpreted, and even invented, various religious teachings, sometimes with disastrous results.

The documentary also showed how doctors and religious leaders - priests, pastors, rabbis, cult leaders, and others - held an inordinate amount of power and influence over people. In general, people seldom questioned the authority, knowledge and expertise of doctors, or that of their religious leaders. If a doctor said a patient needed this procedure, the patient agreed. If a doctor said take this medicine, their command was obeyed. Most never questioned the doctor’s authority. After all, he’d been to medical school and obviously was an intelligent man. He knew what he was doing. He knows all the answers.

Being on the receiving end of this almost complete deference, Zach liked the fact that people had faith in him. He liked that they trusted him and followed his advice. He knew that in most instances they were better off trusting him, because he was a man of talent, honesty and truth. He was totally aware of how much influence and power he had over other people. He also knew he was human, and no matter how smart he was, or how much training or how much experience he had, that he did not know it all.

Zach felt he used good discretion in using his influence and power, but he was also very aware of the potential for abuse of this power. He knew of horror stories where people followed a doctor’s advice and suffered for it. Doctors pretended to know things they really didn't. Patients had unnecessary surgeries. The surgeon screwed up. Wrong medications were dispensed. Greed overcame good judgment. People suffered. And sometimes, people died. Medical mistakes did happen.

There was also the harm that could be done by religious “mistakes” made on the spiritual level. One example was C. J. Woodworth, one of the leaders of Jehovah’s Witnesses. In many ways, Woodworth was responsible for convincing many of his followers that blood transfusions, as well as vaccinations, were violations of God’s word. Many people died needlessly because of this false doctrine. Other obvious religious “mistakes” included the Jim Jones led mass ‘suicide’ in Guyana, the Crusades, David Koresch’s flaming inferno in Waco, and Jim and Tammy Faye Baker’s bilking of the American public.

There were the Moonies who raised money for the Reverend Sun Yung Moon, and the primitive Baptists who spoke in tongues and handled poisonous snakes, sometimes with fatal results. There were countless cults and fakes who deceived the public. Some were on a grand scale within already established religions, while others were unique and had their very own original teachings. So many beliefs, so many stories of “the truth.” Often, it was hard to tell the difference between the so-called cults and the established religions, each with their own lies and deceptions. However, they all seemed to have one thing in common. They all devised ways to get people to part with their minds, their will, their money, their riches – and often, their very lives.

With this documentary, Zach was satisfied with step one in his plan. But he also knew that he had a lot of work and a long row to hoe before he got to where he needed to be.
