THE HATEFUL CHRIST

The hate and violence in the Bible was not limited to the Old Testament. The New Testament certainly has its share of hatred and violence. Christians talk about loving thy neighbor and forgiving people of their trespasses. They speak of turning the other cheek, living in harmony and bringing peace to the world. However, when Zach read the Bible and when he read or listened to what Christians say, he wondered about the source and intent of their words.

For example, here are some quotes credited to the peaceful, loving Jesus Christ himself.

Matthew 10:34-37: "Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's foes will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me."

Luke 14:26: "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."

Luke 12:49-53: "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!... Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided, father against son, and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

Luke 19:27: "But as for those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me."

This is the kind, loving, caring Prince of Peace?
